Borough Road Gallery
Borough Road Gallery opened in June 2012 in the Borough Road building of London South Bank University. LSBU were awarded with a financial grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund in 2011 to renovate part of the building and to implement a two year programme of exhibitions and events. The gallery is home to A David Bomberg Legacy - The Sarah Rose Collection. This collection is made up of paintings and drawings by David Bomberg, Dennis Creffield, Cliff Holden, Thomas Holden, Edna Mann, Dorothy Mead and Miles Richmond.
David Bomberg is considered to be one of the most significant British artists of the twentieth century and taught at LSBU after the Second World War. The collection has been built up over the last 30 years by Sarah Rose, an independent collector who aims to draw attention to the teachings of Bomberg and members of the Borough Group, a collective formed by his students. During an exhibition the gallery is open Wednesday- Friday 1pm-5pm and Saturday 12pm-5pm.
The gallery hosts exhibitions and events throughout the year, to which all alumni are welcome to attend. Exhibitions are not ticketed, and tickets for events are free, however, places are limited so please book early to avoid disappointment. The paintings, drawings and prints that make up A David Bomberg Legacy – The Sarah Rose Collection offer a significant resource for research. For this interim show, the gallery takes research as its focus, becoming a space for study and investigation into the life, practice and lineage of five of the artists from the collection: Dennis Creffield, Cliff Holden, Edna Mann, Dorothy Mead and Miles Richmond.
Borough Road Gallery’s autumn/winter programme will launch on Friday 28 November 2014 with a display of works from A David Bomberg Legacy – The Sarah Rose Collection and an artist residency. The aim for the residency is to continue Bomberg’s legacy by inspiring new work and supporting the development of an artist and their practice, whilst at the same time offering the opportunity to engage with, understand, and enjoy A David Bomberg Legacy – The Sarah Rose Collection in different ways.
