Two PhD Studentships in Engineering

LSBU are offering two new and exciting Ph.D. research studentships in conjunction with Sellafield Ltd.

The Sellafield site has been operational since the 1940s

The first studentship (SL1) will investigate ways to improve the safety of nuclear decommissioning through the better use of passive safety systems for the prevention of hydrogen explosion hazards. It lasts for three years and provides a tax-free maintenance allowance of up to £15,000 per annum plus tuition fees.

The second studentship (SL2), an industrial CASE studentship, will investigate ways of maintaining the performance of hydrogen safety systems when subject to extreme events. It lasts for three and a half years and provides a tax-free maintenance allowance of up to £15,726 per annum in the first instance plus tuition fees. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to develop a range of valuable skills and significantly enhancing their future employability by spending some of their time working in an industrial setting with Sellafield Ltd.

The successful candidates will be joining the Explosion and Fire Research Group within the Department of Applied Science. The team is active in this area and has worked with Sellafield Ltd for over 10 years.

These studentships are open to UK or EU Candidates. Applicants must have a first or upper second class honours degree in an appropriate area such as engineering, science or mathematics.
