An audience with Andy Hunt

On Thursday 13 March, over 100 students, alumni and staff from the Department of Management gathered to hear an inspirational and motivating presentation by Andy Hunt, CE0 of the British Olympic Association, 2008-13.

Andy's presentation pulled from his experience of creating one team culture, transformational leadership and developing high performance teams, all of which enabled him to lead Team GB to its greatest success in over 100 years, at what has been described as the best modern Olympic Games in history.Alumni had the opportunity to ask the Andy Hunt questions after his presentation and then reflect on their discussion over drinks and canapés. The evening also provided a great platform for alumni to meet and network with each other.

Reaction from attendees:

Milo Crummie, Head of Department of Management
“Andy Hunt's presentation around the planning and execution of the hugely successful Team GB performance at the London Olympics in 2012 was both inspiring and motivational. It was a great example for all management students and aspiring managers of the range of issues that need to be considered if projects are to be successfully planned and implemented.

I particularly liked Andy's reference to Team GB's approach to drug testing which was an excellent example for managers in terms of illustrating the importance of Corporate Governance and Corporate Responsibility in ensuring the highest ethical standards are in place for 21st century companies post-2008 meltdown.

His talk also highlighted how fine margins are so important in planning - his example of how Team GB's cycling team won medals as a result of their attention to the minutest of detail was a perfect example of how such planning can be the difference between success and failure for managers. Also, the long lead time and adherence to deadlines in preparing for the games was another good example for managers in seeking to achieve maximum success for their organisations. All in all, Andy's presentation was informative and thought provoking and the range of questions addressed to him following the talk was a testament to how he really engaged our students and alumni on the night.”
