A glimpse of the future of technology

On the 1st of May 2014, hosted by the LSBU Alumni Association and the Department of Informatics, staff, students and alumni of the Department were presented to the insight and experience of Chris Miller, Regional Vice President of Dell Software Group.

The large audience were taken on a journey, exploring how technological innovations started out from humble beginnings in garages and dorm room and how the ideas have today revolutionised how we work, live and play. This was then followed by a “what’s on the road ahead” in terms of technology and how organisations are facing up to the challenges of managing these technological innovations.

Chris explored the current ‘hot areas’ of cloud computing, big data, mobile computing and data storage and security. With some power statistics being presented and explored, such as over £241 billion that will be spent on cloud computing by 2020, Chris clearly demonstrated the impact and importance of informatics today.

As well as explaining how technology is now a business enabler, Chris also warned how this new richness and capability can present its own issues that need managing, such as data storage and cyber security. The reasons why businesses need technology embedded into their strategies was a prominent theme throughout the session, especially given that by 2020, the global population is predicted to reach 7.6bn with an estimated 50bn connected devices. The presentation was followed by a rousing debate from the audience, as well as some thought-provoking questions directed to the evening’s presenter.

Reaction from attendees:

“The event was a useful source of knowledge and information, especially listening to Dell’s Chris Miller speaking about emerging technologies and interesting data about the future development.” LSBU alumna Yvonne Reynolds (Information Technology, class of 2013).
