Dr Hillegonda Rietveld

Dr Hillegonda “Gonnie” Rietveld is Course Director of BA Music and Sonic Media at London South Bank University and Editor of IASPM@Journal. Gonnie has been engaged with electronic dance music since her first recording with Quando Quango (Factory Records, 1982), for whom she was a founding member. As a programmer of rhythms, bass lines, chords and hooklines, she also worked at the famous Hacienda club in Manchester in a range of support roles, and eventually became part of the DJ roster.

She researched and co-edited the book The Hacienda Must Be Built in 1992 and completed her PhD on house music cultures in 1995.  She has since published extensively in the field of electronic dance music culture, including the co-edited book DJ Culture in the Mix: Power, Technology, and Social Change in Electronic Dance Music (Bloomsbury Academic, 2013).

Tony Nwachukwu and CDR

To many, Tony is known as the producer and beat programmer of Attica Blues whose diverse production and remix credits include Macy Gray, The Cinematic Orchestra, Duran Duran and U.N.K.L.E. His lecturing and learning expertise have been utilised by companies and education establishments including LSBU, Red Bull Music Academy, Native Instruments and Ableton.

Founded over a decade ago, CDR (Create Define Release) began when Tony wanted to create a positive venture where he could air musical works in progress while also offering a platform to upcoming DJs and artists, who are invited to bring in their music productions and remixes that are played out during the event. This way, audiences at CDR have been treated to pre-pre-release plays of songs. Following the success of monthly events at Plastic People, CDR went on to achieve international airplay and the release of several compilations, as well as collaborations with artistic establishments such as the Institute of Contemporary Arts, Tate Britain and Whitechapel Gallery, hosting memorable CDR events.
