Announcing Dorothy Mead’s first solo exhibition

The Borough Road Gallery at London Southbank University opened in June 2012 and is host to a variety of exhibitions. Its most recent is ‘Recognising Dorothy Mead: David Bomberg, the Slade and After.’ Mead is a significant twentieth century artist and the exhibition showcases her first ever solo display in a public gallery. It spans across three decades of paintings from working with David Bomberg, her time at Slade and as a mature artist from the 1960s onwards.

Mead’s works have featured in public collections including Tate, the British Academy and the Arts Council Collection. She won numerous prizes whilst studying at the Slade in the 1950s and also became the first female president of The London Group (1971) and the president of The Young Contemporaries (1958-1959, now known as New Contemporaries). Despite her impressive history, Mead never reached the same public status as many of her fellow contemporaries, which some believe is partly due to her rejection of traditional teachings and her commitment to the somewhat controversial David Bomberg.

David Redfern, Archivist at The London Group, says: “To be elected into The London Group, especially to be elected Vice President and then first female President in 1971, shows the level of confidence that Dorothy Mead’s artist peers had in her and her work at that time.

“We are delighted that this exhibition at Borough Road Gallery will acknowledge Mead’s status as an important and underrated twentieth century artist.”
