The exhibition, curated by Professor Andrew Dewdney and newly-appointed curator Rachel Fleming-Mulford - working closely with LSBU student volunteers and graduates - consists of works from the ‘A David Bomberg Legacy – The Sarah Rose Collection’, together with works from the University’s own collection and works loaned by the Miles Richmond Family Estate.

The displays revisit the formation of the Borough Group, with a focus on the period between 1946 and 1951 during which the Group worked with David Bomberg at the Borough Polytechnic and invites visitors to explore what it was like to be a student of David Bomberg in a post-war austerity setting.

The exhibition is organised around three themes - who the artists were, the environment of the University and Elephant and Castle, and the Life Painting class - and includes portraits, cityscapes and figure paintings.

Featuring works of David Bomberg, Dennis Creffield, Cliff Holden, Dorothy Mead, Edna Mann and Miles Richmond, the exhibition also includes video, photographs and texts, which provide a broader social context.

To further bring the displays to life, the Gallery has invited John Constable to create an alternative audio tour to the Borough, which is available on Borough Road Gallery’s website.  The tour explores the local area, its histories and futures in relation to ‘A David Bomberg Legacy – The Sarah Rose Collection'. John Constable is a writer and performer and is also well-known for his innovative guided walks around Southwark and in the City of London.

There will also be a parallel exhibition in the adjacent Digital Gallery, displaying the work of LSBU second year undergraduate Digital Photography students, under the direction of artist and lecturer Paula Roush, who are basing their investigations into the photographic book upon ‘A David Bomberg Legacy – The Sarah Rose Collection’.

The exhibition team includes Rachel Fleming-Mulford, the recently appointed curator of Borough Road Gallery and Assistant Curator Claire Godwin, an LSBU Arts Management Graduate.

The exhibition will be running until Saturday 23 March 2013 and will be open to the public Wednesdays to Fridays from 1pm – 5pm and Saturdays from 12pm – 5pm.
