Let’s Behave at LSBU – celebrating 120 years with the Department of Education

Over 60 education graduates came back to LSBU to celebrate the university’s 120 year anniversary as part of the “Let’s Behave at LSBU” event delivered by the Department of Education.

Jane Courtney, Head of the Department of Education, welcomed back the attendees and introduced the evening’s guest speaker, Sue Cowley. Dulcie Sharp, Senior Lecturer at university, then reminded the guests how important LSBU alumni are and how their input could shape future events and academic practices.

Sue Cowley was then invited to address the audience. Sue, an experienced teacher, writer and presenter, delivered a lively and engaging talk about her specialist area of behaviour management. After qualifying as a primary school teacher, she taught in a number of different secondary schools in London and Bristol and is also the author of recent publications ‘Getting the Buggers to Behave’ and ‘How to Survive your First Year in Teaching’.

Sue’s primary aim through her work is to give practical, realistic and honest advice to teachers and parents. Her talk focused on audience participation as she asked for volunteers to demonstrate her teaching principles as she imparted years of knowledge and tips on how to get the best out of difficult pupils in the classroom.

Education alumni were also invited to take advantage of Groupsaces, a forum for graduates of the LSBU PGCE and GTP courses with news about the university and opportunities for professional development.

Reaction from alumni:

‘A really inspiring evening and welcome bit of input into a tired mind. Loads of things to think about and ideas to use. Many thanks.’
Rob Layton, PGCE Primary 2007

‘Tonight’s session was excellent. It re-enforced my views on behaviour management. Sue’s enthusiasm and anecdotal examples have inspired me to stick to my own thoughts on behaviour management. This will be another legacy for me from London 2012.’
Sarah Glenister, PGCE Early Years 2007

‘An inspirational talk with many realistic ideas to take back to the classroom, with funny anecdotes. A lovely opportunity to revisit LSBU to a well organised event.’
Zoe Tearle, PGCE Early Years 2004
