Business students intern at LSBU

Year 2 students on the BA Accounting and Finance course have completed a seven-week internship in LSBU's own finance department - giving them invaluable career experience and helping the department with the busy financial year-end.

LSBU Business students given hands on experience

The internship scheme was developed jointly by Finance and the Accounting and Finance department in the Business Faculty with the support of the Dean. Together they processed applications, interviewed and selected the interns, and put together the seven-week programme. Each of the six successful applicants was assigned a mentor and gained exposure to senior managers and directors through job shadowing and networking. The interns rotated through various finance teams including Financial Planning and Reporting, Procurement, Financial Accounting and Control, and Accounts Payable. At the end of the seven weeks the students presented a project they were tasked with at the start of the internship.

“A very impressive programme was put together by Priya Gotecha, Angelina Gyakye and Nataliya Irvine,” says financial controller Natalie Ferer. “Lots of other staff were involved in selecting, supervising and mentoring and we used the scheme to give our own staff the opportunity to practise these skills”. Not only was the students’ work directly relevant to their degree and career aspirations, they made a valuable contribution to the operations of the finance department which was focused during that time on the busy financial year-end.

In a thank you card, the students wrote: “The whole finance team as well as the mentors have been great. It was a wonderful experience, and with this you have helped guide us in the right direction in our potential career pathways.” Sarah Moore-Williams, Accounting and Finance undergraduate programme manager, says the scheme was a huge success for both students and staff and they plan to run and expand the programme in 2014 with the support of Student Services as part of LSBU’s wider employability initiatives.“The impact that the programme has had upon the students was evident during their presentations,” says Sarah. “Their increased self-confidence and professionalism shone through.”
