Alumnus of the month – January 2016

Paul Carr
Foundation Degree in Rehabilitation Therapy, 2009

Robert Humphreys

At the age 48, Paul Carr experienced university life for the first time. Consolidating his experience at the NHS with formal training at LSBU, Paul won the Inspiring Educator of the Year Award at the 2015 Health Innovation Network Awards.

“I felt honoured and very proud of my award. But my first thought was to thank colleagues. It would not have been possible without their help and support.”

Paul leads a teaching programme for healthcare assistants and works with inpatients on the stroke unit at Croydon University Hospital. Over twelve months, he compiled “Stroke and Stroke Rehabilitation,” a workbook that enhances core skills and competencies integral to stroke care amongst trainees.

“The workbook also improved multi-disciplinary working, which is essential in this environment. Studying at LSBU meant I could incorporate a holistic approach into my practice.”

The learning curve Paul experienced as a student transformed his thought processes, allowing him to develop in his role as a Physiotherapy Technical Instructor. Since graduating, he has returned to LSBU to share his experience with students and is also continuing his own studies to progress onto the BSc Hons Health and Social Care.

“I am lucky to love my work, which is the driving force behind my career aspirations. I use SMART goals to keep me focused (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-bound) and my advice is always the same: strive to be the best and stay motivated.”

LSBU's School of Health and Social Care has a glowing reputation for excellence, experienced academics and state-of-the-art skills laboratories that ensure our students experience first-class training. 80% of our research into Allied Health Professions and Nursing was awarded the highest quality ratings of 4* or 3* for 'impact' (reach and significance) - Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014.
